Gossman Images

The following images are of John Phillip Gossman and extended family. As in any family, not many
images are marked.  When they are marked, I'll show front and back of the images
Picture
Picture
Here's one of the original image dated August 14, 1910
Picture
This image is dated March 21, 1911.
Back Row: Grandpa Phillip, Uncle William (?? not sure), William Schwein (def. a Schwein, he had brothers who looked similar), Uncle Chris, Uncle Henry
Front Row: Aunt Lou Schwein, Aunt Lina Doerr (in mourning?), Aunt Dorothy Barkman.
Picture
I think this is my favorite image.  It's dated August 8, 1912.  Note the table spread, standard Indiana
summer fare: cantalopes, preserved canned goods and some fancy torte-like desert. Looks like a watermelon
sitting in front of Uncle Chris.
I can't identify everyone but on right side is Grandpa Phillip; William (standing); Aunt Mollie (Uncle Chris' wife); Pearl Gossman (heavy-set, older woman next to younger unknown one); Mary Ann Niehaus Gossman; Uncle Chris at the end sitting behind watermelon.
Picture
The guy in the middle, maybe your Grgrandpa Edward?
Picture
This large group photo is not dated, but I believe it was same date as the one above, March 21, 1911.
Note, Grandpa Phillip is not in this photo.  I believe he's the one taking the picture.  He had his own camera
as you'll see in later pics.  The three Schwein men are in the opening of the porch, they all look alike.  Other
than the ones we've already seen in previous photos, I do not know the names of the others.  What looks
like a railroad track is the fence taken down to take the photo.
Picture
This is one of the last photos of Grandpa Phillip and Grandma Mary Gossman.
Picture
This is Grandpa Phillip's house.  The next photo was one he took on a winter day. This farm passed to
Fred Gossman, then onto his son, Ward Gossman, my dad's 1st cousin.  His widow
sold it in the 1980s.  The farmhouse was standing but vacant and the farmland was rented out to another
farmer to farm.  There where two graves behind the barn.  I recall going out there frequently when I was a
child. Grandpa Phillip's school house was about a mile away, I'm supposing at the corner of what was his farm
field. There is a full page photo rep of the Gossman Sunday School in the Loren Noblitt first Jackson County
History set.  That was the schoolhouse I remember in the corner of the field in the 1960s.  I had a photocopy
of that page at one time, but can't find it right now.

Picture
This is Grandma Mary Niehaus Gossman.  This is a four generation photo with her daughter Mary, granddaughter
and grgranddaughter.  As you can see, the names are written, girl standing is Carol Cockran B[r]anks, seated Mary
Gossman Cockran (she was a teacher and typed Grandpa Phillip's oral history), baby Rita B[r]anks and Grandma
Mary.  I can probably photoshop out the handwriting if you want a clean copy of this.
Picture
This photo is of GrGrandpa Phillip and Mary Ann's sons.  Fred Gossman, Charles (middle
standing--my Grandpa), Edward Gossman (seated--your grgrgandpa?) and James L.
Gossman (the one killed by a falling tree) (back of photo has written John L., but see
newspaper article) (can you believe that's an original article from the 1907 newspaper?  Nobody
threw anything away in this family).

Picture
This is a photo of all of Grgrandpa Phillip Gossman's children.  It's earlier than the
above photo of just boys.  I can only guess as to the identities, but my grandpa
Charles is not there.  I don't believe your grgrandpa Edward is either. I believe
the youngest daughter seated in middle is Mabel Gossman Banks. Probably Fred
and James.
Picture
I think you can tell me something about these two.....
Picture
And this one......
Picture
And two sad ones.  First one is my Grandpa Charles and his twin sister who died at about
6 months of age.  The second I do not know who it is.  It was in a group of photos Uncle
Leon Gossman gave me.  They where my Grandpa Charles and Viola's belongings and
where survivors of the fire that destroyed their home years ago (see back of the smoke
damage). Any thoughts on the sad, last photo? I always supposed maybe a neighbor, but
why would they have kept that.  Could have been my grandma Viola McCormick Gossman's
side.

So, I have a ton of other images.....some identified, others not.  Would you like to see
more of them?  Email me at the addy we've been using.
